# Telling Time to Hours and Minutes || Grade 1

We know that clock has two hands.
The smaller hand is called hour hand and the longer one is known as hand. By using both the hand we can tell the time of the day.

In this post we will learn how to tell time of the day and then will solve some worksheets in order to get familiar with the concept.

## Hands of the Clock

You can observe that the needle which is larger in size is known as minute hand and the smaller needle is known as hour hand.

## Telling Time to Hours and Minutes

The hour hand of the clock tells the hours.
We have already discussed how to read hours using hour hand in previous lessons. Click here to learn about hour hand time reading.

Here we will learn how to read minutes of time using Minute hand of the clock.

In the above clock, the numbers in red color shows time in minutes.
It means that if minute hand is pointing at number 1, then time is 5 mins

Below table shows number in clock and the corresponding time in minutes.

Let us solve some examples to understand the concept better.

Example 01

Hour Hand is at number 8
Hour Time = 8 Hours

Minute hand is at 5
Minute Time = 25 Minutes

Hence the time is 8 Hour, 25 Minutes

Example 02

Hour Hand is at number 3
Hour Time = 3 Hours

Minute hand is at 10
Minute Time = 50 Minutes

Hence the time is 3 Hour, 50 Minutes

Example 03

Hour Hand is at number 7
Hour Time = 7 Hours

Minute hand is at 9
Minute Time = 45 Minutes

Hence the time is 7 Hour, 45 Minutes

## Timing Daily Activities

In this section we will try to understand our daily activities with reference to the time. We will try to figure out what kind of activities we do in the morning, afternoon and night with the help of a clock.

SCENARIO 1
This is Kalpana.
Below is her daily schedule for the whole day.
Please note the time of her activity with the help of a clock

(01) Waking up at 7 o’ clock in the morning

(02) Exercise at 7 hours, 30 minutes in the morning

(03) Breakfast at 9 hours, 15 minutes in the morning

(04) Office work at 2 hour 55 minutes afternoon

(05) Cooking dinner at 8 hours, 20 minutes evening

SCENARIO 2
Below is the daily schedule of Arun, who lives in India and studies in Grade 1

(01) Getting Ready for school at 7 Hours- 10 Minutes morning

(02) Eating breakfast at 7 Hour- 50 minutes morning

(03) Attending school at 9’o clock in the morning

(04) Going to Karate Class at 4 hour-15 minutes in the evening

(05) Taking evening bath at 7 Hour- 55 Minutes Night

(06) Going to sleep at 9 o’ clock night
