Have you ever seen the below device in your home or in your class?

This device is known as the **CLOCK** and they help us to tell time of the day.

There are basically two hands of the clock

(a) **Short Hand **

(b) **Long Hand**

The** Short hand** is the **hour hand** of the clock and it basically tells the time in hours.

The** Long hand** is called **minute hand** and it basically shows minutes

How to tell time?

For the below image, observe the location of hour hand.

Hour hand is at number 3.

Minute hand is at number 12.

This means that time is 3 o’ clock. This can also be written as 3 : 00.

Let us now see some examples so that we can understand the concept fully.

**Example 01**

You can observe that:

Hour Hand is at number 5

Minute Hand is at number 12

So the time is 5 o’ clock (or 5 : 00)

**Example 02**

You can observe that:

Hour Hand is at number 9

Minute Hand is at number 12

So the time is 9 o’ clock (or 9 : 00)

**Example 03**

You can observe that:

Hour Hand is at number 1

Minute Hand is at number 12

So the time is 1 o’ clock (or 1 : 00)

**Time in Analog and Digital Clocks**

There are different form of clocks available in the market, but basically you can segment clocks into two categories:

(1) Analog Clocks

(2) Digital Clocks

**(1) Analog Clocks**

Below is the picture of Analog Clock.

You can see that how the clock face is divided into twelve equal parts.

Each analog contains atleast two hand.

Short hand is known as Hour hand

Long hand is known as Minute hand.

** (2) Digital Clocks**

The picture of digital clock is shown below

In this clock, the first two number show the hour and the last two number show the minute.

Both the clocks are very common to find in our daily life, hence it is important to know how to read time using these devices.

Now we have basic understanding of clocks and time reading, let us now try to solve some worksheets related to this concept. So take out your pencil and paper and try to solve the below exercise questions.
