In this post we will learn methods to round decimals to the nearest hundredth.
Why we round off decimals?
We round off decimals to get approximate value of numbers.
Sometimes the numbers are so long and complicated that it gets difficult to use them for calculation purpose.
Consider the decimal below;
Using the above decimal for calculation purpose will create confusion and frustration.
So instead of using the above exact decimal, we will find an approximate value which is so close to the original decimal that it doesn’t make any difference.
Conclusion
We round the decimal to make it shorter and easy to use in calculation.
Method to round decimal to nearest hundredth
When we round to the nearest hundredth, we take the approximate value of number till hundredth place of decimal.
The number till tenth place will be there as it is.
We will do changes in hundredth place number depending on number present in thousandth place.
Follow the below steps to round to nearest hundredth;
(a) Check the number next to hundredth place (i.e. Thousandth place)
If Thousandth place number ⟹ 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
If the number is 5 or greater than 5, then we roundup the hundredth place number by 1.
Note:
Here the approximate value is greater than original value.
If Thousandth place number ⟹ 1, 2, 3, 4
If number is less than 5, then we leave the hundredth place number as it is.
In this case the approximate value is less than the original value.
(b) Now remove all the numbers after hundredth place.
Given below are solved examples for further understanding.
Example 01
Round to the nearest hundredth
78.856241298
Solution
First check the number in thousandth place.
Number in Thousandth Place ⟹ 6
Since the number is greater than 5, we will round up the hundredth place number by 1.
Hence, 78.86 is the round off number to hundredth place.
Also note that the number is greater than the original decimal.
Example 02
Round off number to hundredth place.
980.97367589
Solution
Check the number in thousandth place.
Number in Thousandth Place ⟹ 3
Since the number is less than 5, the hundredth place value will remain the same.
Hence, 980.97 is the round off number.
Example 03
Roundoff number to hundredth place
2.33574901
Solution
Check the number in thousandth place.
Number in Thousandth Place ⟹ 5
Since the number is 5, we will roundup the hundredth place value by 1.
Hence, 2.34 is the round off number to hundredth place.
Example 04
Round to the nearest hundredth
900.210648291
Solution
Check the number in thousandth place.
Number in Thousandth Place ⟹ 0
Since the number is less than 5, the hundredth place value will remain the same.
Hence, 900.21 is the roundoff value of given decimal.
Example 05
Round off the decimal to hundredth place.
66.389235
Solution
Check the number in thousandth place.
Number in thousandth place ⟹ 9
Since the number is greater than 5, we will round up the hundredth place value number by 1.
Hence, 66.39 is the final solution.
