Given below are solved problems relating to locating points on x – y graph paper.
Before solving the question, please arrange graph paper from local stationary shop.
Question 01
Locate and mark the following points on the graph paper.
(i) (2, 5)
(ii) (-3, 7)
(iii) (-5, -1)
(iv) (2, -6)
(v) (-4, -4)
Solution
In coordinate data (x, y), the first number tells the distance from y axis and the second number tells distance from x axis.
(i) (2, 5)
Distance from y axis = 2 units
Distance from x axis = 5 units.
To locate the point, start from origin and move two units towards right to reach (2, 0).
Now from (2, 0), move 5 units vertically upwards to reach (2, 5)
(ii) (-3, 7)
Distance from y axis = -3
Distance from x axis = 7
From origin, move three points towards left on x axis to reach (-3, 0). Now move 7 units vertically upward to reach point (-3, 7).
(iii) (-5, -1)
Distance from y axis = -5
Distance from x axis = -1
From origin, move 5 units horizontally towards left to reach (-5, 0). Now move 1 unit vertically downwards to reach (-5, -1)
(iv) (2, -6)
Distance from y axis = 2
Distance from x axis = -6
From origin, move 2 units towards right to reach point (2, 0). Now move 6 units in vertical downward direction to reach (2, -6)
(v) (-4, -4)
Distance from y axis = -4
Distance from x axis = -4
From origin, move 4 units towards left to reach (-4, 0) and then move 4 units downwards to reach (-4, -4)
Problem 02
Locate and join the below points in graph paper.
(1, 0), (0, 1), (-1, 0) and (0, -1)
Solution
On joining the above given points, we get a square.
Problem 03
Plot and join below points on cartesian plane.
(2, 4), (5, 4), (-1, -2) and (6, -2)
Solution
On joining the given points, we get a trapezium.
