In this post we will discuss how we can do simple multiplication using number lines. Number line is a simple but very useful concept for students who face difficulty in understanding mathematical manipulations like additions, subtraction etc.
If you face difficulty in grasping how multiplication works, please read the full post as we have explained the concept using different examples.
a. Multiply 5 * 2 using number line
1. As we have to multiply 5 * 2
It means that we have to take 5 unit hops two times
2. We will start with 0
The first hop will take us to number 5
The second hop will take us to number 10
Hence 10 is the right answer
b. Multiply 6 * 3 using number line
1. As we have to multiply 6 * 3
It means that we have to take 6 unit hops three times
2. We will start with 0
The first hop will take us to number 6
The second hop will take us to number 12
The third hop will take us to number 18
Hence 18 is the right answer
c. Multiply 4 * 5 using number line
1. As we have to multiply 4 * 5
It means that we have to take 4 unit hops five times
2. We will start with 0
The first hop will take us to number 4
The second hop will take us to number 8
The third hop will take us to number 12
The fourth hop will take us to number 16
The fifth hop will take us to number 20
d. Multiply 2 * 3 * 4 using number line
The above number can be written as (2*3) * 4
So the question involves two parts:
(i) We will solve 2 * 3 and get 6
(ii)Then we will multiply 6 with 4, that is ( 6 * 4 )= 24
