Month of the year – Lessons for Kids
Before learning about the months, we have to understand the concept of year.
What is a YEAR?
We know that earth revolve around a star called SUN.
The time taken by earth to complete the full revolution of sun is termed as YEAR.
It has been found that earth takes around 365 days to complete the revolution
Hence, 1 Year = 365 days.
What is a Month?
There are lot of days in a year (365 days). So the year is broken into 12 different months for our convenience.
Hence, 1 Year = 12 Months.
Below are 12 Months of the year in sequential order:
(1) January (Shorthand: Jan)
(2) February (Feb)
(3) March (Mar)
(4) April (Apr)
(5) May
(6) June ( Jun )
(7) July ( Jul )
(8) August (Aug)
(9) September (Sept.)
(10) October (Oct.)
(11) November (Nov.)
(12) December (Dec.)
Make sure you remember each of the month in the above sequence. You can also refer the calendar for better understanding of the month arrangement.
Number of days in a Month
In the below list you can observe that:
(a) Most of the months have either 31 or 30 days
(b) February is the only month with less than 30 days
Shortcut to remember number of days in month
I know that its quite a difficult task to remember each of the month’s name with their corresponding days. Below is the shortcut method which will help you remember month with the number of days.
Here is the image of a knuckle. Follow the below step to understand the short
Step 01: Form knuckle using your right hand.
Step 02: Start counting months from left as given in below image
Step 03: Month that lands on knuckle has 31 days.
Month that lands on space has 30 days
February is a special case which either has 28/29 days
Note: When you reach extreme right of the knuckle, you have to double count the knuckle and move backwards. That is why both July and August has 31 days
Let me use the above method to explain days in each of the month.
⟹ January lies on knuckle, hence it has 31 days
⟹ February lies on space, it has 29 days (special case)
⟹ Then the process repeats and we get March, May and July on knuckle, hence 31 days
⟹ Similarly, April & June lies on space ,hence 30 days
Now after reaching the extreme end, we start moving backwards
⟹ we get Aug, Oct and December on knuckles (31 days)
⟹ and September, November on spaces (30 days)
