# Dividing Integers

Integers can be both positive and negative.

To understand the integer division, you should have knowledge of some basic division rules.

## How to divide integers?

There are two possible scenarios for division of integers;

(a) Both numerator and denominator are of same sign.

(b) Numerator and denominator are of different signs.

We will learn both the scenarios in details.

### Dividing numerator and denominator with same sign

The division of integer with same sign always results in positive number.

There are two case possible in this scenario;

(a) Both numerator and denominator are positive integer.

(b) Both numerator and denominators are negative integer.

In both the cases, the division results in positive number.

### Dividing numerator and denominator with different sign

The division of integers with different signs always results in negative number.

In order to solve the division, do the following steps;

(A) Find the absolute value of division

(B) Put the -ve sign on the final answer

## Solved Examples – Integer Division

(01) Divide the below integers.

Solution

(i) -15 ÷ 3

\mathtt{\Longrightarrow \frac{-15}{3}}\\\ \\ \mathtt{\Longrightarrow \ -5}

-5 is the solution.

(ii) -20 ÷ -2

\mathtt{\Longrightarrow \frac{-20}{-2}}

Negative sign cancel each other.

\mathtt{\Longrightarrow \frac{20}{2}}\\\ \\ \mathtt{\Longrightarrow \ 10}

Number 10 is the solution.

(iii) 39 ÷ -13

\mathtt{\Longrightarrow \frac{39}{-13}}\\\ \\ \mathtt{\Longrightarrow \ \frac{-39}{13}}\\\ \\ \mathtt{\Longrightarrow \ -3}

Number -3 is the solution.

(iv) 49 ÷ 7

\mathtt{\Longrightarrow \frac{49}{7}}\\\ \\ \mathtt{\Longrightarrow \ 7}

Number 7 is the solution.

(v) -72 ÷ -9

\mathtt{\Longrightarrow \frac{-72}{-9}}

Negative sign cancel each other.

\mathtt{\Longrightarrow \frac{72}{9}}\\\ \\ \mathtt{\Longrightarrow \ 8}

Number 8 is the solution.
