The concept is not only important for exam point of view, it also set the base for number calculation which is important for rest of your life.
After some years you will all involve in some kind of a economic activity, some will do job in bank while other manage their own business. All the activities involve knowledge of numbers and if you set your base right, you will do well in future.
In this post i have tried to explain how to compare numbers in easy manner.

Find the greatest number
b. 9, 99, 999, 9999
Step 1==> Check the number of digits in each number
Step 2==> Identify the number having maximum number of digit
Here 9999 has maximum number of digits (i.e 4 digit), hence it is the greatest number here
c. Find the greatest number
1902, 1920, 9201, 9021, 9210
Step 1==>Check the number of digits in each number
Step 2==> Identify the number having maximum number of digit
Here you can see that all number have 4 digits. So selecting the greatest number using this strategy is not possible
Step 3 (Check Thousandth Place)==> As all the number is in thousands. Select the number with highest thousandth digit
As you can see that the last three numbers have same number 9 in the thousandth place, so we shortlist these three number
Step 4 (Check Hundredth Place)==> ( In order to find the highest number among the three shortlisted number we will check the hundredth place and see which has the highest hundredth digit
Step 5 (Check Tenth Place) ==> On the basis of hundredth place we have now shortlisted two numbers 9201 and 9210.
Now we have to check which of the numbers have greater hundredth place
d. Find the greatest number
4536, 4892, 4370, 4452
Step 1=>Check the number of digits in each number
Step 2=> Identify the number having maximum number of digit
Here you can see that all number have 4 digits. So selecting the greatest number using this strategy is not possible
Step 3 (Check Thousandth Place) => As all the number is in thousands. Select the number with highest thousandth digit
